HOW TO

How to use

  1. Drag the middle letters of the big word left or right with your mouse or finger. The first and last letters stay fixed.
  2. Even out the amount of white space between letters. Fine-tune with the arrow buttons or keyboard (↑↓ pick a letter, ←→ move 1px).
  3. Submit to see the answer overlaid in magenta, and switch to Mine to see loose and tight gaps marked by color and %.
  4. After 10 rounds you get a total out of 1000 and a grade, and you can copy your result to share it.

FAQ

FAQ

How is the correct spacing worked out?

Each letter is drawn on a canvas and its actual ink is measured row by row. The white-space area between each pair of letters is added up from the tallest letter down to the baseline, counting deep counters only up to a set depth. With the end letters fixed, the middle letters are placed so every pair has the same optical area.

How is my score calculated?

The game measures how far each middle letter is from the answer relative to the font size (em) and turns it into a 0–100 score. The average error is shown in thousandths of an em; about 0.05 em of error is roughly 50 points. Your 10-round total sets a grade from S to D.

What's the difference between kerning and tracking?

Tracking adds or removes the same amount of space between all letters in a word. Kerning adjusts the space between specific pairs, like AV or To. This game trains the kerning eye: different letter shapes need different gaps.

The font looks like a fallback. Where is my best score saved?

If a typeface can't be loaded from Google Fonts, a fallback font is used and noted next to the font name. The answer is computed from the letters actually drawn, so you can still play. Your best total is saved only in this browser, never on a server.
